What started as a simple critique quickly turned into one of the most talked-about—and debated—moments of the night.
Kyndal Inskeep’s latest American Idol performance didn’t just test her vocals—it ignited a wave of reactions after Carrie Underwood made a comment that many viewers are still arguing about.
During Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Week, the Top 9 contestant took on Janis Joplin’s iconic “Piece of My Heart.” It was a bold choice—but as the performance reached its final stretch, Kyndal appeared to struggle, something Underwood addressed immediately.
“You gave up on yourself towards the end,” she said, before adding, “Your voice is amazing.”
That one sentence changed everything.
While Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie stepped in with encouragement—Bryan reminding her that “we all have our rough voice weeks,” and both praising her song choice—the focus quickly shifted to Underwood’s remark and what it really meant.
After the show, Kyndal didn’t avoid the moment—she faced it head-on.
“I don’t think I ‘gave up’ at the end,” she said honestly. “I think I pushed through as hard as I possibly could.”
She also knew her response wouldn’t go unnoticed.
“The internet is probably gonna absolutely roast me… and that’s fine,” she added, showing the same raw transparency that has defined her journey so far.
That honesty is no accident.
Kyndal has made it clear that being “real and raw” is central to who she is as an artist. Whether she’s performing or speaking about her struggles, she refuses to hide behind perfection—even on a stage as massive as American Idol.
In fact, she admitted even before stepping on stage that the previous week hadn’t been her best, continuing a pattern of performances she’s been openly critical of herself.

Part of that struggle comes from the transition she’s still navigating.
“Usually, I’m sitting on a stool with my guitar playing something I wrote,” she explained. “Being out here… singing covers, trying to do them differently—it’s been such an opportunity for growth.”
But growth often comes with growing pains—and in Kyndal’s case, a very real physical toll.
When asked about her voice, she didn’t sugarcoat it.
“She’s tired. She’s really tired,” she said, referring to her vocals with a mix of humor and exhaustion. “She’s kind of raspy today.”
Despite the fatigue and the criticism, one thing remains unchanged: she’s still in the competition.
And for Kyndal, that’s what matters most.
“We’re still here, and it’s all good,” she said. “We’ll see you next week.”
With powerhouse mentor Jennifer Hudson set to guide the Top 9 in the upcoming Disney Night episode, Kyndal now has another chance to reset—and possibly prove a point.
Because if this moment showed anything, it’s that American Idol isn’t just about hitting the right notes.
It’s about what happens when things don’t go perfectly—and how you respond when everyone is watching.
