Sean ‘Diddy‘ Combs starred in Monster’s Ball in 2001. He played Lawrence Musgrove, a Death Row inmate facing his last days before execution. His prison outfit from the film has now been auctioned for five figures amid his real-life incarceration.
A collector spent $24,510 on the rapper’s costume in the movie, consisting of a grey hoodie, jeans with one trouser leg chopped off, and black shoes. Sold by GWS Auctions, the outfit is worn by Combs in the film’s early scenes.
According to TMZ, the outfit was combined with a production costumer’s tag, listing the items and scenes in which they appear. Bidding for the clothing ended on June 7th after 49 bids were received.
Directed by Marc Forster, Monster’s Ball also starred Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry, Heath Ledger, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) and Peter Boyle. It made $45 million at the box office off a $4 million budget.
Forster, known for directing movies such as Quantum of Solace and World War Z, once revealed Combs’ pitch to him for his Monster’s Ball role.
The director recalled him saying, “I’m not bringing none of that superstar shit with me. I’m not bringing my entourage. I’m here to do my work. I’m taking this very seriously. I’m here to learn, help me. I want to be an asset. I know I can be an asset to the film. I feel like I’m the best person for the role, and I want the role. I’ve got to have it.”
Combs has been behind bars since September and is facing charges of racketeering, sex trafficking by force, and transportation for purposes of prostitution. He faces up to life in prison if found guilty of the five counts against him, which he’s denied.
While no photos of Combs have been allowed during his trial, his choice of outfits was previously revealed. The Southern District of New York allowed him to “receive non-prison clothing,” including five button-down shirts, five pairs of pants, five sweaters, five pairs of socks, and two pairs of shoes without laces.
