Twenty-two-year-old West Virginia native Mor Ilderton saw his journey on American Idol come to an emotional end after taking a bold gamble during Hollywood Week, one that even came with a warning from Carrie Underwood.

Before contestants took the stage at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, Underwood urged them to choose wisely. She encouraged singers to perform well-loved cover songs rather than originals, explaining that a familiar hit can help win over both the judges and the audience.

“When the stars align for you guys, when you’re on a stage like this, sing a song that somebody’s just been waiting to hear,” she advised.

Mor, however, decided to follow his heart.

“I’m definitely taking a risk,” he admitted ahead of his performance. A songwriter at heart, Mor had already impressed during his audition with an original track titled “Strong.” For Hollywood Week, he once again chose to share his own music, performing a deeply personal song called “How to Love You.”

Dressed in a tan sweater and jeans, Mor skipped the Idol band and performed with only his acoustic guitar. The stripped-down setup put full focus on his lyrics and vocal delivery, a move that immediately stood out.

Underwood playfully warned the crowd they might boo her before offering her honest critique. “In a room like this, for you to bring an original song with that incredible band sitting behind you, I feel like it was a missed opportunity,” she said. Still, she added that she loved his voice and believed the risk ultimately “paid off.”

Despite the mixed feedback, Mor remained hopeful in the Golden Room. “The fact that I’ve made it this far with original music gives me confidence that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life,” he shared.

When it came time for the final decision, Lionel Richie delivered the news. “You’ve already won because you’re here. The talent is in you, but it’s going to be the end of the line for this moment,” he said, confirming Mor would not advance to the Top 30.

The elimination sparked strong reactions online. On American Idol’s official social media pages, fans were divided. Many praised his courage and raw talent, with one writing, “He should have made Top 30,” and another adding, “West Virginia is behind you.” Others felt song choice played a major role. “Song choice is everything,” one viewer commented, while several noted they struggled to understand some of the lyrics.

Some supporters even suggested he audition for other shows, while others encouraged him to continue writing and performing. “That was a brave thing to do. Keep writing and singing,” one fan posted.

Though his Idol journey has ended for now, Mor’s decision to stay true to his artistry left a lasting impression. For the young songwriter, the risk may not have led to the Top 30 — but it proved he is committed to telling his own story, no matter the stage.
