South Mississippi native Daniel Stallworth is heading to the next round of American Idol after delivering a show-stopping performance that brought the judges to their feet during Hollywood Week.

The 27-year-old Moss Point High School graduate performed “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King during the episode branded “Hollywood Week in Nashville – Part 2,” where the competition was narrowed from 127 contestants down to the Top 30. Stallworth’s soulful rendition — complete with his own vocal runs and soaring high notes — left a lasting impression on the panel.

As the final notes echoed through the auditorium, all three judges stood to applaud. Country superstar Luke Bryan was visibly moved by the performance.

“To take a song that we’ve heard so many times and to just take it to the rafters of this place, you are a truly special person,” Bryan said.

Lionel Richie was so energized by the moment that he jumped out of his seat in excitement — an unexpected reaction that underscored just how powerful the performance had been. Carrie Underwood, who previously praised Stallworth during his audition, once again showed her admiration as the Moss Point native proved he could command one of the competition’s biggest stages.

Stallworth later admitted he wasn’t used to performing in front of such a large audience, but the overwhelming response boosted his confidence.

“I didn’t really expect them to react the way that they did,” he said in a post-performance interview. “It made me feel like I can believe that I’m a star.”

Daniel then learned he would be advancing into the coveted Golden Room, officially securing his spot in the Top 30.

The former Alcorn State University graduate and current Houston elementary school music teacher has already won praise for his audition performance of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” with Richie telling him his students would see him as “the greatest thing that has ever shown up in their lives.”
