The family of legendary rapper Eminem is reportedly mourning another loss following the death of his maternal grandmother, Betty Nelson, who passed away at the age of 87.
According to reports from sources close to the family, Betty died Tuesday at her home in Missouri after complications related to breast cancer. The loss comes during a difficult period for the rapper’s family, as it follows the passing of his mother, Debbie Nelson, little more than a year ago.

A Difficult Time for Eminem’s Family
Debbie Nelson died in December 2024 after battling advanced lung cancer. Her relationship with Eminem—whose real name is Marshall Mathers—was famously strained for many years, often becoming part of the rapper’s music and public narrative.
Their conflicts became widely known after Eminem referenced his mother in the song My Name Is from his breakthrough album The Slim Shady LP. In the track, he made controversial claims about her behavior, which eventually led to a high-profile legal dispute.
Debbie Nelson filed a defamation lawsuit against her son seeking $11 million. The case concluded with a much smaller settlement, reportedly around $25,000, most of which went toward legal fees.
Despite the tension, both mother and son later expressed interest in reconciliation.

A Grandmother’s Public Criticism
Betty Nelson had also spoken publicly about her disappointment regarding Eminem’s music during the early years of his fame.
In a 2000 interview with The Mirror, she said she struggled to reconcile the rapper’s shocking lyrics with the grandson she remembered.
She reportedly described his songs as “vile” and “disgusting,” saying she couldn’t believe the language coming from the boy who once affectionately told her he loved her.
Her comments reflected a broader generational divide surrounding Eminem’s provocative style, which often used graphic storytelling and dark humor to explore personal struggles.

A Complex Family History
Eminem’s early life, including his difficult upbringing and strained family relationships, became a major theme throughout his music career. Songs across multiple albums touched on childhood hardship, poverty, and conflict within his family.
Over time, however, the rapper appeared to reflect on those tensions with more empathy.
In 2013 he released the emotional track Headlights, in which he apologized to his mother for past lyrics and acknowledged the pain his words may have caused.
In the song, Eminem directly expressed regret for earlier songs, including Cleanin’ Out My Closet, saying he no longer performs it at concerts because of the harsh way it portrayed his mother.
Attempts at Understanding
In interviews over the years, Eminem spoke about developing a more compassionate perspective as he grew older.
He explained that despite their distance, he still felt love for his mother simply because she was his parent. With time, he said he began to understand some of the challenges she faced during his childhood.
These reflections marked a shift in tone from the anger that characterized much of his earlier work.

Remembering a Family Matriarch
While Betty Nelson’s relationship with her famous grandson appeared complicated at times, she remained part of the family history that shaped one of hip-hop’s most influential artists.
Her passing marks another chapter closing in the personal story behind Eminem’s music.
Neither Eminem nor his representatives have publicly commented on her death so far. Fans and observers, however, have begun sharing condolences online as news of the loss circulates.
For many, the moment serves as a reminder that behind the fame and controversy lies a family navigating the same grief and reflection experienced by countless others.
