Offset was once addicted to codeine. However, an incident with his eldest son helped him kick the habit for good.
Appearing on actress/singer Keke Palmer’s podcast, the former Migos member opened up about his addiction and how codeine helped his lifestyle as a busy rapper.
“You do a lot of things to cope because the job is a lot,” he told Baby This Is Keke Palmer. “You’re traveling a lot of the time. Can’t be with your kids a lot of the time. People saying this and that.”
Then, a moment with his son, Jordan, changed everything. “I had a wake-up call with my oldest son,” he said. “He kept asking for Pineapple Fanta, but he doesn’t really drink soda.”
He continued, “One day, he came into the studio and he asked, ‘Why is your soda a different colour than mine?’ It killed me.”
Struggling with how to respond, he recalled, “I had to lie to him, and I was like, ‘Mine is old. I’m about to throw it away.’ I just grabbed it and walked off, and I went into the room and damn near cried because I felt bad as a father.”
Not only was his addiction affecting interactions with his son, but the rest of his family also weren’t impressed.
“My momma didn’t like it, nobody in my family liked it, and it started to hurt,” he said. “When your momma calls and she’s like, ‘You ned to get off of that stuff,’ two or three times, it hurts.”
Offset released his latest solo album, Kiari, in August. It features NBA YoungBoy, Gunna, JID, Key Glock, Ty Dolla $ign, and many others.
