R Kelly was hospitalised after overdosing on medication. The Chicago singer, currently serving 30 years on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges, collapsed in his prison cell at FCI Butner Medium I in North Carolina while in solitary confinement.
Kelly was put in isolation on June 10th and provided medication by members of staff on June 12th. Then, the following morning, he fainted, experienced dizziness and lost his vision, before being taken to Duke University Hospital.
According to court filings obtained by AllHipHop, doctors determined that Kelly received a life-threatening dose of medication and kept him under observation for two days. The incident occurred days after Kelly’s lawyers accused prison officials of plotting to kill him. His attorney, Beau B Brindley, claimed the amount of drugs issued wasn’t accidental, either.
“That means that, within two days of the filing of his motion, Bureau of Prisons officials administered an amount of medication that significantly exceeded a safe dose and caused Mr Kelly to overdose, putting his life in jeopardy,” he said. “They gave him an amount of medicine that could have killed him.”
Doctors recommended surgery, but officials allegedly removed him from the hospital against medical advice.
“Within an hour, officers with guns came into his hospital room and removed Mr Kelly,” Brindley said. “He was taken from the hospital against his will and against the directives of the doctors. He was denied the surgery he needs to clear blood clots in his lungs that threaten his life. This happened. This will be confirmed by hospital records. It is undeniable.”
His legal team filed an emergency motion on June 16th in a third request for a temporary release to home confinement.
News of an overdose comes after Kelly’s lawyers accused prison officials of asking an inmate to murder Kelly in exchange for freedom.
