Sean ‘Diddy‘ Combs is scheduled to be sentenced on October 3rd. Ahead of the hearing, the rapper is asking for a shorter sentence than suggested.
Combs was found guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution over the summer and is preparing to be sentenced next month.
The charges together carry a maximum 20-year sentence, with the probation department recommending a maximum of seven and a quarter years.
In a filing on September 22nd, Combs’ attorneys claimed he was acquitted of the most serious charges against him, referring to racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Laying out his life story, his lawyers asked for a maximum 14-month sentence. This would result in Combs being released two months after his scheduled sentencing due to time served.
“For decades, Mr Combs struggled with serious substance abuse issues, anger and anxiety, and other flaws that he did not properly or professionally address until his incarceration last year,” the filing read. “Like every addict, his behaviour while on painkillers was erratic and unpredictable, and often the reason behind any assaults discussed at the trial.”
Combs’ lawyers claim his painkiller addiction was often the reason for his assaults, and that he was now sober from drugs and alcohol. They also included statements from family members and friends, including his ex-girlfriend, Yung Miami, who spoke highly of him.
They added, “Mr Combs has already seen how being arrested and convicted can destroy his reputation and lead to terrible collateral consequences for his businesses. And he recognises the consequences his actions have had for himself and his family.”
For now, Combs will remain behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he’s been since September 2024.
