Kyndal Inskeep didn’t just have a tough night on American Idol—she almost lost her voice completely.
In one of the most vulnerable moments of the season, the Top 9 finalist is now opening up about the frightening reality behind her latest performance, revealing just how close she came to everything falling apart on stage.
During Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night, Inskeep pushed through a performance that viewers could see wasn’t easy. But what they didn’t fully realize at the time was just how serious things had become behind the scenes.

She was sick. Her voice was failing. And at one point, she wasn’t even sure she could sing at all.
“It was a struggle for me Monday night. I’ll be honest about that,” she admitted. “I got through it, and I’m proud of myself for doing that.”
What followed was a moment she says she still can’t fully explain.
“I have no idea how, because there was nothing coming out… but something came out.”
For Inskeep, the performance wasn’t about perfection—it was about survival.

Choosing a Janis Joplin song, she leaned into the lyrics as a source of strength, connecting deeply with the message in a way that reflected exactly what she was going through in that moment.
“Do I wanna be a really tough woman who goes out there and does everything that she possibly can?” she said. “That’s where I was.”
Still, she’s not pretending it went smoothly.
“It was kind of an ‘ouchy’ moment for me,” she admitted, acknowledging how difficult it was to fall short of her own expectations—not just in front of the judges, but in front of millions watching at home. “It was a very humbling experience.”
And then came the shock.
As the results were announced, Inskeep wasn’t expecting to hear her name. In fact, she only realized she had made it through when the credits were already rolling.
“I was not expecting that,” she said. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity.”
Now officially in the Top 9, she’s choosing to focus on what comes next rather than what went wrong.
“Being a part of the Top 9 is such a dream and opens so many doors,” she shared. “It’s been a crazy challenge… so to make it this far, everything else is overflow at this point.”

Up next is Disney Night—a fan-favorite episode that brings a whole new level of pressure. And this year, the stakes are even higher with the return of powerhouse vocalist Jennifer Hudson as mentor and guest judge.
Hudson, who first rose to fame on American Idol in 2004, has since become an EGOT winner and global star. Her return marks a major moment for the show—and for contestants like Inskeep, it’s another opportunity to prove they belong.
Despite everything she’s just been through, Kyndal isn’t backing down.
She’s still here. Still fighting. And now, with her voice recovering and another performance ahead, she’s ready to step back on stage—this time with something to prove.
Because if this week showed anything, it’s that even when her voice nearly disappeared… she didn’t.
