Local singer Braden Rumfelt continues his journey on American Idol as he prepares to compete in the highly anticipated “Ohana Round.” The episode, filmed at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, features the Top 30 contestants performing in front of their families, fellow contestants, and music industry experts.

Rumfelt’s parents, Crystal and Chris Rumfelt, say one of the most rewarding parts of watching their son on American Idol has been seeing his confidence grow as a performer.
Crystal noted that while she enjoyed hearing him sing the song “Girl Crush,” his second performance showed how much he has developed on stage.
Growing up singing in church, Braden often stood still while performing and frequently closed his eyes while singing. Watching him embrace a stronger stage presence during the competition has been a meaningful moment for his family.
Chris Rumfelt shared a similar view, saying he appreciated how Braden brought his own style to his performances.
The first song highlighted his ability to reinterpret familiar music, while the second performance allowed him to show more energy and personality on stage.
Returning Home to Perform for Fans
Before heading to Hawaii for the “Ohana Round,” Rumfelt returned to western North Carolina for a performance at Western Carolina University.

From Athlete to Singer
Before pursuing music seriously, Rumfelt had dreams of playing baseball in college. As a high school athlete, he spent much of his childhood focused on sports.
However, those plans changed after a medical condition forced him to step away from the game.
Rumfelt was diagnosed with a congenital issue that caused his legs to develop in an abnormal position. To correct the condition, he underwent two lower-leg realignment surgeries after experiencing knee pain during high school.
The recovery process not only changed his athletic path but also redirected his focus toward music.
Facing Mental Health Challenges
After his surgeries, Rumfelt began dealing with intrusive thoughts and anxiety related to illness and contamination.
He later explained that he developed contamination-related obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) — a condition that caused overwhelming fears about getting sick.
The experience was extremely difficult, but Rumfelt says therapy has helped him make significant progress.
Sharing his story publicly during his American Idol audition allowed him to raise awareness about mental health struggles that many people face.
A Musical Family
Music has long been a part of Rumfelt’s life. Growing up in Murphy, North Carolina, he regularly performed bluegrass gospel music in church with his family.
Beyond singing, he is a multi-instrumentalist who can play piano, bass, and mandolin. He is also a songwriter, adding another dimension to his musical talent.
His family’s musical background helped build the foundation for his performances today.
The Support of His Twin Brother
Another important figure in Rumfelt’s journey is his twin brother, Kellen Rumfelt.
Kellen supported Braden during his audition by playing guitar while he sang — a moment that highlighted the close bond between the brothers.
Like Braden, Kellen is also a musician and can play several instruments, including banjo, guitar, mandolin, and bass. He is currently a student at Western Carolina University and continues to support his brother’s music career.
